Merkes Coaching offers 4 coaching options which are outlined below. Merkes Coaching also offers a complimentary 30 minute first meeting with cyclists who are thinking about subscribing to one of the services. This chat will help you decide wish coaching option suits you best and will help Paul Merkes write your personalised training programme (World Tour and Pro-Continental options only).

All training programmes will be uploaded to your personal TrainingPeaks account (no paid subscription necessary). As soon as you decide to sign-up for one of the coaching options, you will receive an email outlining how to set-up this account (if you haven’t got one already). World Tour

The World Tour coaching option offers most out of all the packages available at Merkes Coaching.

During a complimentary 30 minutes first meeting (book here) we will talk about things like your training history, what you are currently doing, and your future goals and how you think you can achieve these goals.

After the first meeting and after you have decided to sign-up for the World Tour coaching option, Paul Merkes will send you an email to set up the subscription.

As soon as the first payment is in, Paul Merkes will upload the first week of your training programme to your TrainingPeaks account. The first week will be a test week with specific tests tailored to your goals. Data from these tests will be used to create your personal power output and/or heart rate training zones.

The data from the test week will also identify your strengths and weaknesses. Based on this, your personal goal(s), and availability, a personalised training programme will be uploaded to your TrainingPeaks account every 4 weeks. During this period your fitness, adaptation to training, and personal mood state will be closely monitored by Paul Merkes and your training programme will be adjusted if necessary.

When compared with the Pro-Continental coaching option, the World Tour package offers more communication, and advice in strength & conditioning (S&C) and nutrition (upon request). Coaching triumphs by a good relationship between coach and athlete. Key to a good relationship is honest communication and more communication is better. Additionally, S&C has shown to have a positive effect on cycling performance. Furthermore, good nutrition doesn’t win you races but bad nutrition helps you lose. If you wish, S&C and/or nutrition advice can be included in your training programme.

Pro-Continental

The Pro-Continental coaching option is currently the most popular package at Merkes Coaching.

During a complimentary 30 minutes first meeting (book here) we will talk about things like your training history, what you are currently doing, and your future goals and how you think you can achieve these goals.

After the first meeting and after you have decided to sign-up for the Pro-Continental coaching option, Paul Merkes will send you an email to set up the subscription.

As soon as the first payment is in, Paul Merkes will upload the first week of your training programme to your TrainingPeaks account. Continental

The Continental coaching option will help to improve your performance but lacks a few key elements to get the best out of you.

During a complimentary 30 minutes first meeting (book here) we will talk about things like your training history, what you are currently doing, and what you are type of coaching you are looking for.

After the first meeting and after you have decided to sign-up for the Continental coaching option, Paul Merkes will send you an email to set up the subscription.

As soon as the first payment is in, Paul Merkes will upload a basic non-personalised training programme to your TrainingPeaks account every 4 weeks. During this period your fitness, adaptation to training, and personal mood state will be monitored by Paul Merkes but your training programme will not be adjusted if necessary.

Additionally, heart rate training zones will be created based on your self-reported maximal heart rate.

Recreational

The Recreational coaching option offers a science based training programme without any form of feedback.

During a complimentary 30 minutes first meeting (book here) we will talk about things like your training history, what you are currently doing, and what you are type of coaching you are looking for.

After the first meeting and after you have decided to sign-up for the Recreational coaching option, Paul Merkes will send you an email to set up the subscription.

As soon as the first payment is in, Paul Merkes will upload a basic non-personalised training programme to your TrainingPeaks account every 4 weeks.

Additionally, heart rate training zones will be created based on your self-reported maximal heart rate.
